Holland Marsh Agricultural Area

This year marks the 100 year Centennial of the Holland Marsh Agriculture Area. I explored part of the Marsh recently on a photo outing. This region, once drained specifically for agricultural purposes, has played a significant role in local farming for a century. Beyond its iconic canals, dikes and black soil which enable the cultivation of carrots, onions, and lettuce within the marsh, the surrounding upland farms rely on well-planned irrigation to sustain their own crops. These interconnected systems not only highlight the ingenuity behind local agriculture but also underscore the lasting legacy that the marsh’s transformation has had on the broader community.
