Vintage Hay Baler

I discovered this vintage baler during a Purple Hills Artisan Tour near Creemore Ontario. I was delighted to photograph this part of farm history.

Unlike the much larger balers seen in the background, this one produces smaller round bales, reminiscent of my childhood on the farm. It was a noisy machine that shook and rattled with several moving belts and pulleys.

I remember the experience vividly; the hay bales, once formed, would be left in the field for a few days to dry, and it was my responsibility to roll each bale over to ensure the bottom side dried properly before we loaded them onto the wagon. It was a significant chore, as improperly stored hay could ignite in the barn due to internal combustion, making our work all the more crucial. This vintage baler not only reflects the past but also evokes a strong sense of nostalgia for those essential farm days.
