Maple Cross Red Barn
Maple Cross Red Barn
A red barn situated in winter conditions is located within the Maple Cross Nature Reserve, a 32-hectare area acquired and preserved by the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust. I was inspired by its quiet resilience against the backdrop of winter. The barn was photographed during a snowshoe program organized by ORMLT. The barn’s red façade stands out in snow, encapsulating stories of tradition and stewardship.
Barns are typically painted red due to farmers historically adding ferrous oxide, or rust, to linseed oil mixtures. The iron from the rust helps protect wood from decay, and the mixture imparts a deep red colour to the paint. This style of red barn reflects agricultural practices and history.
Through this image, I hope viewers reflect on the harmony between preservation, agricultural history, and the natural world.
Prints include sizes 8”x10”+ 11”x14” mat ready to frame or larger print sizes shipped rolled.
